My swimming sucks

55 days without sticking a toe into the pool will do it.

At least I'm consistent.

Did I really sign up for a 3862m swim 340 days from now? IN THE FREAKING OCEAN!? WITH SHARKS? AND WAVES? That I have to follow with a 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile slog? And finish before midnight? Of the very same day?

Hmmm, but looking on the bright side, if I can do exactly that pace at IMFL, I'll be out of the water in 2:02!!! That will do it!!

Comments:
Absolutely..they give you 2:20 to do it in, and you'll do it!!!!

Hey, whatever it takes. I'm just hoping to finish under the cutoff. I posted something very similar to this over on my blog www.imf2006.blogspot.com

I did some math this morning in the pool while swimming, and figured if I could swim 3:00 per 100 yards, I'd finish in a little over 2 hours.

Even though you think your swimming is not good now, it will get MUCH better before next November. You (and I) will finish in well under 2 hours, I guarantee it.

Keep it up!

Have you ever had a coach or swim instructor look at your stroke? I see a lot of people at my pool try too hard, and end up wasting a lot of effort. When I swim, I'm always thinking these words: Strong, smooth, silent, glide, slow down, stay steady.

Yes - I have to tell myself to slow down. Swimming is kind of like golf. In golf, if you try too smash the ball too hard, it often doesn't go too far. You can usually hit it further with a slower smooth swing. Somehow, for me, this works in swimming. If I decrease my stroke count, allow myself to glide a bit more and swim a little less harder, I usually end up with faster splits over longer distances.

Another idea: Have you heard about Total Immersion swimming? I tried it for a while and really liked it. I've reverted back to "normal swimming". But, I really learned how to glide and swim silently with this method. http://www.totalimmersion.net (They have some good videos) I got the book from the library, and ran through the self-teaching drills.
